You may be required to undergo a chest x-ray and/or a medical examination depending on your intended activities in Australia; your country of citizenship or residence; the length of time you intend to stay in Australia, your age or any other circumstances relevant to the state of your health. After you have determined that you do need to undergo a health examination based on the information found in Health examinations, you can arrange an examination before lodging your visa application. Otherwise you will be advised to arrange an examination after you lodge a visa application.
Health Examination Before Visa Application Lodgement
Applicants who intend to lodge a visa application in the near future and who have decided that they wish to undergo a health examination before lodging their visa application must first complete My Health Declarations from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection's website.
Applicants applying for a visa that can take more than six months to process are advised not to undergo a health examination before lodging their visa application. Visit the Application Processing Time - Service Standards to see if this applies to you.
Health Examination After Visa Application Lodgement
Applicants who are required to undergo a health examination:
- after lodging their online visa application will need to complete their medical history information online and download a Referral Letter, or
- after lodging their paper visa application will be sent a Health Examinations List from the processing office
To undergo a health examination at panel hospitals in Japan, you MUST have a Referral Letter or Health Examinations List when you attend the hospital. Information on panel hospitals in Japan can be found at the department's website.
