About this visa

Transit visa (subclass 771) is for clients who need to pass through Australia

  • on his/her way to another country or
  • to join a ship as a member of a crew

Japanese passport holders and clients holding passports for certain countries can transit in Australia for up to 8 hours without a visa. Detailed information on this arrangement can be found the Department of Home Affairs website.

NOTE: If you are a holder of an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) eligible passport and intend to pass through Australia to join a ship as a member of a crew, you can enter Australia with an ETA.

What can I do with this visa?

If you are a holder of a Transit visa (subclass 771), you can

  • pass through Australia on his/her way to another country or join a ship as a crew member and
  • remain in Australia for up to 72 hours

This visa is not for clients who intend to enter Australia mainly for

  • tourist activity (sightseeing, recreation or seeing family and friends) and
  • business visitor activity

For activities above, a Visitor visa (subclass 600), an ETA or an eVisitor visa should be considered.

This visa is also not for clients who intend to enter Australia to perform highly specialised work for less than 3 months at a sea vessel anchored at a seaport in Australia. An appropriate visa for this activity is a Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400).
