Dual citizenship

It is possible to hold citizenship of two or more countries if the law of those countries allow. This is known as dual, or multiple, citizenship.

Australia allows its citizens to hold dual nationalities (see: dual citizenship). Other countries may not. If you are a citizen of another country and wish to apply for Australian citizenship, it is important to check if the other country allows its citizens to hold dual or multiple citizenships.

Dual nationality is recognised by the Japan under very specific circumstances. Please contact Ministry of Justice, Japan for more information on the country’s laws on dual nationality and loss of citizenship before proceeding with your Australian Citizenship by Descent or Citizenship by Conferral application.

The Department of Home Affairs is unable to provide advice on other country’s laws on dual nationality.
