Current passport delivery times

The Australian Passport Office (APO) is experiencing strong demand for passports. You should allow a minimum of 6 weeks to get a new passport or renew your old one. Current processing times can be confirmed on the Australian Passport Office’s website (noting the processing time displayed does not include international postage times from Australia).

Priority processing service is not available in Japan. Please note incomplete applications will cause delays.

Please let us know if you have an upcoming flight, an urgent need for a new passport or you are travelling in the next 6 weeks so we can discuss your options.

  • Plan your travel accordingly and lodge your application early to ensure you get your passport in good time.
  • To minimise processing time, make sure your application includes everything we need. Incorrectly completed applications will cause delays.
  • Passport photos taken in photobooths are rejected so please use a photo shop. The photo background must be white/grey. Retouched/edited photos and glasses are not permitted. Photos with digitally altered backgrounds will be rejected.

Passport services are by appointment*

Due to refurbishment works at the Australian Consulate-General in Osaka between late February and mid-April 2024, the availability of in-person appointment slots will be limited.

We encourage you to apply by postal mail if the service you are requesting does not need to be done in-person.

Thank you for your understanding.

*Adult Passport Renewals can be lodged via postal mail.
*Child Passport Renewals for eligible applicants* can be lodged via postal mail.

(*Children who have previously held an Australian passport and are aged up to and including 15 years old)

Please note that for in-person passport services, you should approach the office that covers the area that you live in. Please click on the links (Tokyo and Osaka) to see which office covers your prefecture.

When visiting the Embassy in Tokyo or Consulate-General in Osaka for consular, passport or notarial services you must have an appointment. Please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes prior to your appointment in Tokyo and 5 minutes prior to your appointment in Osaka. We ask that you avoid bringing anyone to your appointment who is not required to attend. Please do not attend an appointment if you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with someone who has been unwell. If you need to reschedule your appointment,  this can be done online or contact us to reschedule it.
