National Reconciliation Week occurs annually from 27 May to 3 June, celebrating Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and promoting reconciliation. Watch these great videos to learn more about the work of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) with Japanese subtitles.
The items in AIATSIS’ collection are keys to the past and the culture of Australia’s First Nations people.
How does AIATSIS organise the more than one million items in its collection? Getting out into the community is one way to identify the source of photos and audio material.
Holding more than 170,000 publications, AIATSIS staff research First Nations cultures and assist people to re-connect with their family and cultural identities.
The collection of 5,000 video titles and over 700,000 photos record First Nations’ languages, ceremonies, music and oral histories, which help people re-establish family connections.
AIATSIS has extensive photo and film collections which it has been digitalising recently. This will contribute to the more accurate representation of Indigenous culture and history.
