We provide passport services to Australians in Japan from our Passport Offices located in Tokyo and Osaka.

Please note: From 1 June 2020, the Australian Embassy Tokyo will accept credit card payments only (Visa/Mastercard/Amex Credit and Debit Cards only) for all notarial services and Australian passport applications.

For in person notarial services and Australia passport applications at the Australian Consulate-General in Osaka, cash will continue to be the only accepted form of payment.

  • Under our Client Service Charter, we aim to issue passports within three weeks
  • Priority processing service is not available in Japan
  • Please read all instructions carefully as incorrectly completed applications will cause delays
  • Plan your travel accordingly and lodge your application early to ensure you get your passport in good time
  • Passport photos taken in photobooths are rejected so please use a photo shop. The photo background must be white/grey. Retouched photos and glasses are not permitted

Temporary Passport Arrangements during Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic 

In response to the COVID-19 situation in Japan, temporary passport arrangements have been implemented to allow for Australian citizens in Japan to apply via mail for a Limited Validity Passport.  A Limited Validity Passport can be issued for a maximum validity of 12 months when an applicant cannot meet all requirements – in this case, when an applicant is unable to attend a face to face interview in Tokyo or Osaka due to the COVID-19 situation.

A Limited Validity Passport may be exchanged for a free replacement passport valid for the remainder of the normal 10-year period for an adult passport or five-year period for a child passport, once a face to face interview with all original supporting documents takes place.  This face to face interview must take place before the expiry of the Limited Validity Passport. 

Mailed applications will be accepted by the Australian Embassy Tokyo only.

At this time, in person appointments for full validity passports and also for Emergency Passport applications are still available by appointment only at the Australian Embassy Tokyo and Australian Consulate-General Osaka.  For the safety of our staff and visitors, we ask that you do not bring anyone to your appointment or interview who is not required to attend.  Please book an appointment below.

Australian citizens holding an expired Australian passport will be permitted to enter Australia.

Please advise airline staff you are an Australian citizen and do not require a visa to enter Australia (even if you are a dual citizen).  The airline will contact the Australian Border Force to verify your citizenship.  It is important you get to the airport early in case of any delays. Departure from the country you are in is subject to the rules and decisions of authorities in that country. Please note that upon arrival in Australia you will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine at a designated facility (for example, a hotel) in you port of arrival.
