Research Officer (Political) - Job Ref – 0192/2026

The Political Section at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo is seeking a highly motivated professional to provide research and analysis on fast‑moving political, geostrategic, and other emerging issues relevant to Australia’s relationship with Japan and the shared geopolitical‑economic environment. The role includes monitoring and interpreting Japanese and English‑language sources, preparing high‑level written and oral advice, and supporting engagement with stakeholders across government, academia and relevant forums.

Applicants must demonstrate strong analytical capability; high proficiency in both written and spoken Japanese and English (including translation and interpreting); excellent communication and teamwork; and the ability to prioritise and deliver under limited direction. An understanding of Japan’s political and bureaucratic systems, and knowledge of Japan’s politics, security policy, economy and international relationships, is required.

Public Diplomacy Officer (Strategic Communications) - Job Ref – 0231/2026

The Public Diplomacy Section at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo is seeking a highly motivated communications professional to lead the Embassy’s strategic communications and digital diplomacy activities.

The role supports the development and delivery of integrated communication strategies that promote Australia’s policies, priorities and activities in Japan. Responsibilities include managing the Embassy’s digital presence in English and Japanese, producing high‑quality multimedia content, and coordinating communications logistics for major events, projects and senior‑level visits. The position also involves preparing briefing materials, monitoring online sentiment, and engaging with stakeholders across government, media and partner organisations. Applicants must demonstrate strong strategic communications capability; high proficiency in written and spoken Japanese and English; excellent judgement, teamwork and stakeholder engagement skills; and the ability to manage multiple projects with limited supervision. Experience managing social media platforms, developing digital campaigns and producing visual content is required. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, content management systems and digital analytics tools is highly desirable.
