Duty Free Allowance on cigarettes and tobacco products for international passengers arriving in Australia

If you are aged 18 years or older, you can bring in duty free:

  • one unopen packet of up to 25 cigarettes (or the equivalent of 25 grams of tobacco products), and
  • one open packet of cigarettes.
You can bring in up to 1.5 kilograms of smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco or snuff) for personal use, but you will have to pay duty on any tobacco above 25 grams (only 25 grams is allowed duty free).

If you are bringing in more than your duty-free allowance for tobacco and cigarettes, you must declare it on the incoming passenger card and pay the duty. If you do not declare the excess cigarettes or tobacco products on the incoming passenger card, you may also be penalised and required to pay a heavy fine. In some instances, you may also face visa cancellation or be refused entry into Australia.
