Interpreting and Translating Services

The following is provided for the information of Australian travellers and those needing interpreting or translating services in Japan. It does not purport to be an exhaustive list. While every care has been taken, the Australian Government cannot accept any responsibility for the probity, ability, or charges of the service providers listed.

We do not provide interpreting or translating services.

If you require interpreting (spoken) or translation (written) services in Japan, there are a range of options to choose from, depending on your purpose. While Australia has a national certification system for interpreters and translators (NAATI), Japan does not.

If you need a formal translation of documents for use in Australia, you may be required to use a provider registered with NAATI (see below). We recommend you confirm with the recipient of your documents if they require a NAATI-accredited translation.

There may be special translation requirements in relation to notarial services. For more information, see here

For other purposes, you may wish to select from any number of corporate or individual providers in Japan.

NAATI

The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) is the national standards and certifying authority for translators and interpreters in Australia. The NAATI website has a database of qualified translators and interpreters, some of whom are based in Japan.

Please visit the NAATI website and access the Online Directory. Select the required service type and languages, then apply the location filter to locate accredited translators or interpreters in your area.

If you require a translation for notarial purposes, please ensure you confirm with your receiving authority if NAATI translation is required.

International Associations and Foreign Resident Advisory Centres

If you require a community interpreter or translator in Japan, the International Association or Foreign Resident Advisory Centre at your prefectural or municipal government office may be able to assist in locating a volunteer or paid provider.

Please find a list of International Associations here (external site): International Associations - Consultation Services - Multiculturalism Promotion - The Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR)

Please contact the relevant local municipality to enquire if they have a Foreign Resident Advisory Centre or similar service.

Corporate Providers (non-NAATI certified)

There are several businesses that provide interpreting and translation services in Japan. In general, such providers are geared toward servicing corporate clients, however, some may be willing to offer services to individuals for ad-hoc interpreting or translation. Please enquire directly with the provider.
