The Australia-Japan Economic Security Dialogue

The Australia-Japan Economic Security Dialogue was held yesterday (4 March) in Tokyo. Ministers announced this framework for exchanging information and supporting bilateral cooperation in economic security at the Eleventh Australia-Japan Foreign and Defence Ministerial Consultations in September 2024.

The Australia-Japan Economic Security Dialogue is a senior officials’ level policy dialogue between Australia’s Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) and Japan’s National Security Secretariat (NSS). Mr Pablo Kang, First Assistant Secretary, International Division, PM&C led the Australian delegation. Mr Matano Motosada, Senior Director and Cabinet Councillor, NSS, led the Japanese delegation.

Australia and Japan noted their shared commitment to free and open markets and rules-based trade and investment. Senior officials discussed cooperation to strengthen supply chain resilience, protect critical infrastructure, improve data security and governance, and support research security and integrity.

Senior officials also reaffirmed the importance of deeper engagement on economic security, including opportunities for further cooperation on critical minerals supply chains under the Japanese Economic Security Promotion Act and Australia’s Future Made in Australia agenda.

The Australia-Japan Economic Security Dialogue will be held regularly and is an important mechanism under the Special Strategic Partnership between our two countries.
