Matthew has significant experience in key trade and investment leadership roles with Austrade based in Australia and Japan. He commenced his current role in November 2025.
He was most recently Director for Austrade’s Asia Investment Team in Australia, focused on attracting productive Foreign Direct Investment from the Indo-Pacific region into net zero and critical technologies related strategic projects in Australia. Prior to this role, Matthew was Austrade’s Departmental Liaison Officer within the Office of the Minister for Trade and Investment.
Matthew was previously posted to the Australian Embassy in Tokyo as Counsellor (Commercial) and Trade Commissioner, leading Austrade’s Services and Technologies Team across Japan to support Australian businesses export to the Japanese market. He has also held roles as a Senior Export Adviser with Austrade in the professional services, consumer and agribusiness sectors.
Matthew’s qualifications include a Master of Commerce in International Business from the University of New South Wales, and a Bachelor of Economics and Asian Studies (Honours) from the Australian National University. He has also studied at a Japanese university.
