SONGS Special 'Masaharu Fukuyama SONGLINE' : The first episode "What Makes People Sing?"
SONGS Special “Masaharu Fukuyama SONGLINE”
The first episode “What Makes People Sing?”

NHK General TV
What makes people sing? What does music mean to humans?
Masaharu Fukuyama hosts the NHK special documentary series of 2016
Japanese singer-songwriter Masaharu Fukuyama travels to the birthplaces of music across the world.
The first episode, “What makes people sing?” explores the roots of songs.
Fukuyama first visited Arnhem Land, northern Australia. Arnhem Land is the so-called sacred place for the Aboriginal people, who settled in Australia more than 60,000 years ago. The Yolngu people in Arnhem Land are still living a nomadic, hunter gathering life. Their traditions and myth have been preserved through song. In this episode, Fukuyama visited a Yolngu family and stayed with them following their traditional lifestyle.
Fukuyama sang a song with his guitar for the 30-member Yolngu family, and the family performed a sacred rite for Fukuyama. A Japanese musician and the Yolngu people shared a great time through music beyond their language and cultural differences.
