Consular and Passports Officer - Job Ref: 0543/2026

The Australian Embassy in Tokyo is seeking a highly motivated bilingual Consular and Passports Officer to join the Consular Team. This role plays a vital part in delivering essential services that support the wellbeing and safety of Australian citizens abroad.

Consular work is fast-paced, demanding, and deeply rewarding. The successful applicant will demonstrate a proven aptitude to deliver high level client service, exceptional interpersonal skills and resilience. They’ll be able to cultivate strong working relationships and work flexibly in a fast-moving environment. Please note the position may require some late night or weekend work when urgent consular cases arise out of hours.

Strategic Communications Assistant - Job Ref –0519/2026

The Public Diplomacy Section at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo is seeking a highly motivated communications professional to support the Embassy’s strategic communications and public diplomacy activities. The role contributes to the delivery of communications strategies that promote Australia’s policies, priorities and activities in Japan, while helping to strengthen Australia’s profile and engagement with Japanese audiences.

The position supports the management of the Embassy’s digital presence in both English and Japanese, including creating and coordinating content for social media and digital platforms. The successful candidate will help deliver public diplomacy campaigns, support major events and high-profile visits, contribute to alumni engagement and sports diplomacy initiatives, and assist with the preparation of briefing materials, talking points and speeches for senior staff. The role also involves working closely with colleagues across the Embassy, Australian Government agencies and external partners to advance the Embassy’s public diplomacy objectives.

Applicants should demonstrate strong communication, organisational and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience in strategic communications, public relations, event management or a related field. High-level proficiency in written and spoken English and Japanese is essential. Experience developing content for social media platforms, creating multimedia products, managing competing priorities and delivering projects in a fast-paced environment will be highly regarded. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, content management systems, digital analytics tools and social media platforms is desirable.
