13 June 2023

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has today confirmed Ms Nancy Gordon will be Australia’s Commissioner General for the World Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai.

In this role, Ms Gordon will lead the Australian Pavilion in showcasing Australian values, culture and innovation in line with the World Expo’s theme of Designing Future Society for Our Lives.

CG Gordon has a long personal and professional connection with Japan. First visiting Japan as an exchange student at Waseda University during her undergraduate degree, Ms Gordon returned to Japan as Counsellor, Public Diplomacy at the Australian Embassy Tokyo from 2008-2011.

The Australian Pavilion story, ‘Chasing the Sun’ encapsulates Australia’s connection to land, unfading resilience and collaborative nature in embracing ingenuity, optimism and opportunity for a better future. Australia’s participation in the 2025 Expo was announced on 6 January 2022.

Australia has a long history of noteworthy pavilions at World Expos hosted in Japan. The Australian Pavilion at the Expo 1970 Osaka was inspired by Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’, symbolizing the growing importance of Japan to Australia.
