Lauren Berkowitz's installation at Australia House as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2024

13 July-10 November 2024
Tokamachi-city, Niigata Prefecture (Australia House)

More information

"Residual Matter" is new sculptural installation by Lauren Berkowitz, created during a three-week artists residency at the Australia House in the Niigata Prefecture. She was commissioned by the Echigo Tsumari Triennale, with the support of the Australia Japan Foundation.

The artwork is built from transformed empty food and liquid containers, recycled by the Urada residents over a period of eight months. The work suggests the cyclical harvest, abundance and sustenance, but also the threat of plastic pollution and climate change to the region and its resources. With natural light and the breeze animating the artwork throughout the day, it reflects on notions of continuity and temporality.
